I am in the market of buying a new cellphone and a new mp3 player. Why not buy one device that does both? I am looking for a phone that will work on the tmobile (USA) network. What would you recommend?

Criterias:

1. Battery Life
2. Slick Design (Smaller the better)
3. Not a flip. Slider okay.
4. External memory or hard drive based
5 Good reception in Detroit, MI area
6. Capable of uploading/playing games and movies.

Samgsung SGH D900 is the phone for you. Slider. Thin .71 inch thick. Plays MP3 with expandable MicroSD card slot. Also video 3GP and MP4. Java enabled for games. It is quad band GSM so it will work with T-Mobile. I beleive that covers all your requirements. Can't say anything about reception though. Oh did I mention 3mega pixel camera with flash.

Will run you around $300 - $400

Another would be the phone I have now, which is the Nokia N80, however that would not meet your "small" requirement. This phone is a brick, although not heavy. But feature heavy including speakers, wifi, and document viewer.

w850 is hot. w800/810 is solid, cheap, great camera. d900 is very slick but the battery life is quite poor. n73 is an awesome phone, but a little larger. same with k790a. i really ilke the LG Fusic, but it's a flip.

as far as Mp3 phones go, nothing can beat the Sony Ericsson W810i. Its quadband and has a great camera, but the real beauty is the mp3 player app. You can minimize and maximize the player with the push of a button and then work with the rest of the phone, and the app itself is very full featured and a lot like any DAP you see today. Plus, and this is a biggie, the the W810 uses a type of memory that lets you expand far more then the typical MicroSD using phone (i.e. the D900), so 4gigs is a piece of cake, and more is possible I believe.

Another good option is the Motorola ROKR E2, which uses nice cheap SD cards for music, and has a recently overhauled operating system that is much better than before. It also has a nicer screen and better music quality then the Sony, better mp3 player controls (bigger, and on the side) and a standard 3.5 mm jack although the camera isn't as good. Its quadband as well, although it has not been offered by any carrier in North America yet, although that gives you exclusivity. I should also mention that the Motorola is pretty moddable too, so thats another plus.

Okay I really had great experience with the Samsung brand. I had the D600 and D807. Is the D900 better than the D600. I know it has a better camera but what about the other features?

the D900 is good, but the mp3 player is seriously lacking. It can technically...work, but as far as I know it doesn't sort fully by id3 tags and I'm not sure it can even be minimized with the rest of the phone. If you want a good phone and like Samsungs, then I guess its a good choice, if you want a true mp3 player then you should look elsewhere. Just my 2 cents.

Here's a side by side comparison between the D600, D900 and SE W810i

D900 just improves the design of the D600. Better data capability and better camera. Music player and video player is also improved and upgraded. Not sure about the D600, but the D900 support bluetooth headphones. Just checked co-workers phone, the music play can play in the background while working with other apps.
