Looking for book about a young girl at Chautauqua in early 1900s?

I cannot remember the name of this book. I read it when I was in fifth or sixth grade around 1978. The young female protagonist had a father, but no mother. And I think she and her father were traveling in a model T type car. And they may have been in the midwest or upstate New York.
