character is slowly going insane? For my “Advanced Composition and Research “ college class I need to write a 2000-2500 word comparison essay, comparing two fictional short stories and their authors. I am very interest in doing a comparison of two short stories that involve the deterioration of the mind into madness, insanity, etc.
My question is: Dose anyone know of any really engaging short stories that you would recommend, where the main character's mind is deteriorating into madness, depression, insanity, etc. throughout the story? I would truly appreciate any suggestions and if possible maybe a link to the story if you know a online location. Please, no Edger Allen Poe as he done way to much and my class has already covered him in class discussions.
On another note: I been trying really hard to jog my memory of a rather good short that fit the above criteria which I read while in middle or high school. It was in one of my text book, but I can not remember the name or author of it. All I remember was the main character was an astronaut that I believe was on mars or another such planet. During the story, he is all alone and he is slowly going insane from the isolation. At the end of the story he starts seeing a terrifying beast staring back him. He becomes so terrified of this beast, he ends up having a heart attack and dies. Only for the reader to find out afterwords the beast was his terrified face reflected in his ship's window. If you recognize this short story please let me know the name and the author or whatever you can tell me as I really would like to use this one. Thank you very much for your time in reading my post and for any help you can give.
