I've been looking for a book for years that I once read from the local library. It was a small book with a white cover and a small black and white image on the front. I'm fairly certain that it was in the young adult section of the library.
From what I can remember about the plot it was about a man that lived by the sea in a small house with many animals. He was alone and liked it that way. One day a mermaid (I'm almost positive that it was a mermaid) washed up on the shore and he took her in to care for her. She became friends with the animals but was very naive about things like fire. She tried to touch the flames in the fireplace one day and the man was able to stop her. He fell for her and I believe she for him.
Has anyone read this? I work at a bookstore and have many resources to find books but I can't even remember a title. (It's driving me a little crazy!)
