I recently started getting into biking, and I find it to be very enjoyable, but I was wondering how I should structure my exercising schedule to get the most out of my exercises. I am a 16 year old male with practically no athletic history whatsoever, I weigh around 124-130 pounds am 6 feet tall, and usually get around 7-9 hours of sleep every night.
Last weekend, on Sunday (two days ago), I went on my first long bike ride. It was 27 miles over about 5 hours.
I heard that exercising too often can actually cause one to become weaker in body strength, so I took yesterday (Monday) off to relax and not ride at all.
I'm interested in building my leg muscles so that 27 miles will not be an extremely fatiguing slow ride (as the last one was), but I want to be careful not to over-exercise. My plan is to take an 8-12 mile ride once every 2 days, and on weekends take the same 27 mile course.
My question(s) to you are - Is the idea of taking one-day breaks between long rides efficient for someone my age with no athletic history and slightly underweight? Should I be taking longer/shorter breaks? Are 10 mile rides too long/short to start with?
Thank you.
