Looking for advice on a good road bike for commuting 20 miles?!?

Hi,
I'm looking to commute to work about 20 miles round trip 5 days a week. I know it will take some getting used to, but I'm in decent shape (I'm a 7 year Marine) and look forward to the challenge. Its mostly flat and downhill on the way to base, and flat and uphill on the return trip. I have been trying to do some research but am really in over my head and its turning out to be very time consuming! I was hoping someone could suggest a decent starter bike, I'm not willing to throw down a couple thousand dollars until I get used to riding and find the features I like! I'm looking to spend less than $1000, but am hoping to get one around $500. Thanks for your time!

Matt
Hey, thanks for the advice on the motorcycle, I actually already have one and am loving it, I'm looking for info on a bicycle, specifically road bikes!

Try Craigslist.com people post up their bikes for sale on there. you can ask to check the bike out and stuff. The typical starting bike is one with a 250cc engine that's the type of bikes i used during the motorcycle classes i took last year. im not sure if you know this but if your enlisted in the marines your required to take a bunch of safety classes before you can start riding your motorcycle. my best friend joined the marines recently and his father was asking our opinion on whether or not it would be worth it to ride one.

But yeah. 250cc is the starter bike, around 500cc is intermediate and around 700cc is advanced

the number represents the size of the engine. the bigger it is the more powerful
