Looking for a working phone for my area

I live in a rural area of Texas and with my current phone I can not receive or make calls from my home. I can drive a couple of miles from my home and get a signal. My provider is Cingular, is there a phone that would help with my signal problem or am I just out of luck. My contract is finally up and I want to upgrade but not if the phone isn't going to work at home.

I have found a that a good phone will make a small difference, but it is very unlikely that it will give you a signal for a couple miles further. Usually a good phone might make a difference up to about half a mile in my experience. I've always heard that Nokias are very hard to beat for Cingular.

Is there any other provider(s) available in your area that you might be able to try for a trial period? If you're not sure, if you list your general area or zip code somebody should be able to figure that out for you.

If not, there are setups with cell repeaters, external yagi antennas, and such that might give you a signal. But the best option is to try different carriers and hope that at least one of them gives you a decent signal where you live.

I tried Cellular One, which is big in this area, but that was a no go, switched to Cingular because they assured me it would work. They were going off my zip code, not my physcial address. I live in Leon County, Texas, 77865 I am probably out of luck until more towers go up in this area and I do not expect that to happen anytime soon.

Try Verizon? They have good coverage, almost as good, if not better than Cingular. You can also look at T-Mobile and Sprint as they sometimes have funky coverage areas where others don't. Not likely in your case, but you never know.

Verizon nor Sprint sell service to the zip code. It looks like Cellular One (Dobson) and Cingular hold the cellular band licenses for the area. I remember reading several threads a while back about Dobson doing a lot of building in the area so if you know anybody that still has them, you may want to invite them to your house for dinner to see if you're now covered ???
