Looking for a sports bike.?

Hey I am looking for a bike that I will enjoy to ride. I don't want a harley style bike I want a sports bike. I don't know whether to chose a 250cc or 600cc. I am a beginner, but I want something that I can learn on and then ride for a long time. I am 6'00" I weigh 200lbs male. I thought about getting a Ninja 250r, but I think that it might be too small for me. I need help. Also trying to keep this under $3000 don't care if it is used.
Also I have been riding before but I wouldn't call myself any kind of expert.
 
Have a look at the Suzuki SV650: not an outright racer but comfortable, plenty of grunt and very popular. Available in faired and naked configurations. Motorcycle USA website is a good source of info for beginner bikes.
