Looking for a road/hybrid bike for city trails?

I love to bike and I will probably be biking about 30 km 2-3 times a week. I like biking on the city parks/ bike trails. And even roads.
I am looking for something in the "fitness" category.

I have looked into trek and they are quite pricey...
Can you recommend me some good bikes for good price? I am looking to spend somewhere around 500-600$ CDN
I have been told that there are some really good bikes out there from smaller compaines and they are cheap.

Okay, i am flexible with the price...as long as its not over $1000 CDN.
 
You would like a cross bike. 700 c wheels will give you less rolling resistance for racking up the miles. 26' are okay for offroad buy not as nice for commuting and paved trails. You might look for a good light MTB frame that is disk brake- then you could have a spare set of 700c wheels for fast cruising. I have this setup on my Cannondale and it works great- but can add more to your investment. Diamondback has a disk commuter too of you like.
 
There are lots of hybrid bikes in that price range.
