Looking For A Novel Name and Author?

I remember reading about it, but now the title and author escape me. All I can remember is the author was in talks with a criminal about his crime and subsequent lock-up from his murders and then helped get this criminal out of prison, where the criminal then confessed to the murders.

Anyone have any idea what I'm talking about? A author or title, or some help in the right direction?
