Looking for a good, small stereo system for under $600?

I've recently realized I have a very junky stereo system in my room, and I would like to replace it. I need a stereo system for under $600, that will fit on top of a dresser or bookcase, has very good sound, and is compatible to play an iPod. I will be playing along with most songs on my guitar (loudly) so I don't want a small, low volume system.
