LOOKING FOR A GOOD FICTION NOVEL BY AN AMERICAN AUTHOR?

This is very specific.

PLEASE DO NOT JUST ANSWER WITHOUT
READING THE REST OF THIS QUESTION!

I have an assignment for school that requires selecting
the right book because it will be a lot of work.
This is what I am looking for/want :) :

* FICTION NOVEL, not a short story or anything else,
by an AMERICAN author

* something fluidly written in a modern fashion --
EASY TO READ THROUGH without confusion or frustration;
practical (so no books from romantic period, unless truly
is good and does not require rereading a paragraph three times)

* Has CLEAR THEMES that make a person THINK
and sticks with them throughout their life; teaches
a true life lesson or concept that will be useful;
changes way someone looks at things
(some novels take a lot of interpretation to get anything
out of it other than enjoyment; others have very strong
themes that speak to a person)

* NOT TOO SHORT / NOT TOO LONG! For me,
that would mean nothing less than 200 pages,
And if it's a reeeeally good book, then maybe a little past
300.

* A book with at least 6 LITERARY CRITICISMS.
(if you do not know what this means, then it means:
rule out any book that was written within past 20 years)
