Looking for a book recommendation (based on info)?

I'm looking for a book that is by an at least fairly well-known author but at the same time is not a super well-known classic. I also want the book to be roughly 400-600 pages and contain a lot of criticism of society, technology, OR other major facets of life.

I know this may seem weird, but I'm trying to find a good book to write a summer essay on, and I would like to write about how an author employs criticism in the novel.

For example, "Hard Times" by Charles Dickens, which criticizes industrialism.
 
Not sure how long it is but "The Jungle" by Upton Sinclair (sp?)
criticizes the meat packing industry of the time and has socialism as a theme especially toward the end.
