looking at the blackberry pearl, geared more towards a work/play phone

Its starting to get to the point where a simple cellphone with just voice (not even text messaging) is becoming more of a hinderance than a help, so ive been seaching around for a phone that would be great for work, and also useful when im not working.

a coworker of mine turned me on to the blackberry pearl a few days ago and after using it for a while befure i had to go on a service call i was pretty impressed... getting email pushed to it, google maps, (and blackberry maps), internet that is more than text based, and the list goes on...

essentially chat and email are a must, a camera is nice and not needed, the pearl is the right size (allthough i wish it weighed a little more), putting mp3s on it (or flashdrive) is nice also...

my co worker is currently trying out some remote desktop software, so hopefully that does work because i do a good portion of my work in remote desktop/terminal services...

so how have these phones performed for other it professionals? essentially i will have it for 2-4 years, and would like to make it an easy way to help with my daily tasks (like constant email monitoring while off-site)

then of course, there could be other phones, some of the other techs are using razr's, older model blackberrys, and i think one has a sidekick....

now, this weekend i visited a t mobile store and got some pricing, and one thing that stood out was the fact that if i got a 600/1000 mintute plan with blackberry internet for the phone, i could do web, email, but no text messaging / aim... aim is a big thing for me, its how all of my coworkers keep in touch, and also friends..... my main questions is, does the text messaging for tmobile work like the regular built in text messaging for phones, where i could have aim loaded and using my blackberry internet feature, rather than being charged X cents per message. i am not familar with cellphone texting as the one i have now is... well old...

any insight for the aim/text part of the phone is appriciated, also any good alternatives, and people responding if they like this phone or not for email and general use.
