ive talked to a guy about a 1982 custom deluxe chevy pickup. the motor runs very nice, it has 160,500 miles. little body rust, and new tires/brakes. he wants $500. this would be my first car and i dont want to make a bad decision on what i get. is it worth it???

Early 80s GM trucks were very prone to rust and I'd take a very good look at the cab and bed. They are also very prone to front end wear and I'd not be at all surprised if you'll need to rework the entire front end suspension. Look for signs off oil use and leaking as they have had seal and gasket problems over the years. Take a good look at the trans for leaks and note the color of the fluid on the dip stick. If it is not the original red/pink color but leaning a bit toward brown you might be in trouble. Overall $500 is not a lot to spend as long as you realize that you are very likely to be putting some money into any truck this old.
