Long reins nice head carriage or Normal reins and normal head carriage?

I have a 3 year old gelding that I trained by myself and I always rode him with a long rein because he always seems so much more comfortable with a long rein and collects beautifuly. But when I try to have a a medium ish rein he won't collect he just has a normal head and doesn't seem to like it all. My coach always tells me to shorten up and that it looks super slopy, but I think a long rein and collected head looks better than a medium rein and normal head. What do you think?

Try to take up the reins enough that it dosent look sloppy but your horse can still be relaxed you want a horse to drop its head so dont try forsing in to pull its head up.
 
your horse should learn to give to the bit no matter how short or long the reins are I also have a 3yr old who will give to me he just cant hold it for very long takes a lot of practice im sure your horse can learn
