Quality textile overpants will keep you warm and dry. They also provide some additional protection during a fall. Full length, 2 way side zippers for easy donning and doffing. If it gets a little warm, you can create a vent by zipping down the upper part of the zipper. I have the First Gear HT II Overpants. They're is a close out special at New Enough. First off 800 miles in one shot? yeah your ass is gonna hurt, heck it would hurt on a UC, only 200 miles short of an Iron Butt...but can you do it? sure you can, enjoy it, probably not!
DO you have to make it in one day? 2 days on some two lanes, enjoying the country would be a nice ride. 2 1/2 even better.
People have ridden all over the country on a lot smaller bikes and had a good time. Common sense is the major factor. I like riding until around 6:00 PM, and then find a motel, get a good supper and relax for the evening.

As for setting up the bike, a good windshield would be high on the list along with some type of backrest. If the backrest is out of reach ( money) pack a roll bag of some type and put it on the rear seat to lean against.
Comfortable bars would be sweet too. A mesh jacket or at least long sleeves to minimize heat and sunburn..
Go to the Iron Butt Association web site, there is a lot of good info on long distance riding.

800 miles is going to be about 16 hours in the saddle...I sure would allow 2 days for the ride....

Yeah, the old days,

73 Sporty,Superglide seat, .060 over, andrews gears, 63 rear swingarm

2000 mile trips alot but had to carry 2000 miles worth of tools too
 
Nice Sporty. I see you were running Goodyears on it. Those were probably the worst tires I've ever ridden on. Brings back horrid memories of the first rainstorm I rode my '81 Lowrider in.
