Locked in 5th Gear

Had a funny thing happen to me on my 2010 FLHTK. I was cruising on the highway in 5th gear, tried to up-shift to 6th and nothing would go, Couldn't even downshift to 4th. Didn't panic and continued to tried shifting but nothing happened and then the green "6" light came on indicating I made it to that gear. At first I thought it might have been a light malfunction and that I might have been in 6th, but the revs were too high when I was having the problem and when I made it to 6th, the revs dropped to where it should have been for my speed. Managed to get off the highway, downshifting and upshifting and made it to the dealer. The dealer said that he has never seen a bike stuck in any gear unless the linkage was frozen. And because it is operating properly now, he can't understand what happened. Does anyone have an ideas? The bike is perfect now.

I seldom use 6th gear and when I do the dash light does not always come on.
May have to bump the shift lever up to get the light to come on.
Never had any problems going in or out of any gear.

I don't even get the point of the light; we don't have or need a light for first, second, third, fourth and fifth, so why sixth? We have tachometers and those that don't have marks on the speedometer, and we all have ears. Well, most of us... my wife always complains that I don't listen to her.

Before putting on my slip on mufflers, you couldn't hear the engine at all going over 60. It came in handy then, not so much now.

Total guess but maybe the clutch cable was binding somehow in the sheath. (???) I've seen cable lube products out there for sale so this may not be impossible. (???)

Sometimes when coming to a stop, I notice the 6th gear light comes on around 2nd, and then it goes right off. It's been doing that on occasion since I got the bike about six months ago. Never really thought anything of it, guess I should mention it to dealer, but other than that, it's never gotten stuck in another gear.

The 6th gear light comes on when the trans is in 6th gear. has nothing to do with rpm/vehicle speed.

Well, you are correct that it is in 6th gear when the light comes on. However, the light comes on as a result of speed and rpm with a signal from the ecm. That's why there is a slight delay in the light coming on. That's what I've been told.

You are correct. Calculation in the ECM with speed and rpm. I think you can clean the pick-up a little and it will make things a little better for the light coming on. Seems they say it can get some metal shavings on it. I haven't had the problem quite yet. Hope that helps
