Wow,
On the history channel about 6 months ago, - their story with all the mapping out and all else they do, put it on Wilkes being a confederate who did not want the war stopped. I believe his story had something to do with his family being ruined and he wanted to be the one to be the Hero of the South's cause.
It was so interesting that he endured great misery just trying to get away from the Feds looking for him. He spent several days in a swamp, unfed, and unable to find people to help him along the way. Those people were tired and wanted to get back to an economy. They refused him.
Those who did help were already waiting for him, - consequently lied to the Fed soldiers, later arrested and hanged.
I remember there were 3 involved in it. It turned out like the soon to be Key Stone Cops. Wilkes only ran with one man, who soon regretted it because their slick plans were not realized.
Nothing about greenbacks.
Perhaps the 2 accounts do cross over at some point.
