Libya has arrested eight people in connection with the fatal attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, which groups such as Ansar al-Shariah are suspected to have carried out, the country’s prime minister-elect said in an interview today.
Mustafa Abushagur said the leaders of the groups believed to have carried out the Sept. 11 attack that left the U.S. ambassador dead have fled the country, crossing over into Egypt. They are currently being sought, Abushagur said in an interview in his Tripoli office. All the people arrested so far are Libyan nationals, he said.
The prime minister-elect said the country had a “very specific” plan on how to secure the nation, which has struggled with violence since last year’s uprising that ousted longtime leader Muammar Qaddafi.
While he declined to elaborate on those plans, he said the government currently is unable to force militias that played a key role in the uprising to disarm.
