Liam Neeson on the axing of the UK Film Council 'it's quite appalling'

The government just have a long list called "Things we don't like" and they're cutting them as soon as they can.

This is one of many cuts to come.

It's a sad state to be in. The country is going to go into a depressed state shortly.

Films are not important, you see. We don't *need* a film industry here you see and if we don't need it, they want to cut it. We might as well just sell off all our studios to America, ey!

Millionaire actor whines when a bankrupt government does something rational by putting low priority stuff like tax payer funding of movies on the chopping block. Whopeee...

Hang on, what the hell is the Film Council? A quango of luvvies given tax payers cash to hand out to fims THEY want to see developed?

Might explain why the UK film industry is so weak. Maybe if the UK started making fims people wanted to see, you know, went a bit more "Block Buster" and used real UK talent, then the UK would'nt need hand outs from government to make films...

It always amazes me when I watch DVD extras, just how much of HollywooRAB special effect work/cgi/sets get done over here, or by British artists/set designers, costumers, that have gone to work over there. Yet the UK has nerver really produced any blockbuster SciFi type movies even thugh it oozes the talent that makes it possible for Hollywood.

Stop making the 15th clone of LockStock, make something people want to see, and the money will take care of itself. Look at Avatar, there is money in them there blockbuster hills.

What are you talking about, look at harry potter.

Hollywood actually suffers from productions shooting in other countries to take advantage of cheaper labor and government film subsidies, so the idea that hollywood benifits most is silly when every other movie has the blanding effect of a souless canadian city filling in for an american one.

Anyways the idea of having to use uk talent is a nonstarter when uk talent is used in us productions. If the us limited its talent pool it would suffer. Demanding that you use local talent is a good way to stifle creative output, so you get those small local "art" films funded by such subsidies all the time, cable tv, straight to video precious garbage.

The Film Council is a ridiculous body anyway. It gives money to films that really don't require it.

There was an article on it in the times (which, for obvious reasons, I cant give a link to )
