One of my objections to civil partnerships vs. same-sex marriage has been that there are many federal statutes (tax laws and others) which would still make state-passed civil partnership statutes unequal under federal law (and I think I stand on fairly solid ground with this).
But what if the Congress passed a simple bill defining state-recognized civil partnerships as being equivalent to marriage as concerning all federal statutes?
Would that not pave the way for states to pass civil union legislation, without it being inferior to traditional marriage under federal law?
Just a thought. Not arguing against same-sex marriage in any way, I guess it's just a legal thing.
