LG Incite Owners: Does the Wifi receiver work w/out the media package?

I was told that the Wi-Fi receiver the phone has will not function without me purchasing the $30 media package that AT&T has. I can't see how this is true considering that my PSP has a Wi-Fi receiver and I use it all the time. Personally, I think its really silly to pay AT&T in order to use FREE internet, so can you guys clear this up for me?
