LG enV touch--can you turn off the backlight while charging?

Just got this phone, and I love it...but this is bothering me.

I charge my phone at night, and since it's my alarm I keep it on a nightstand next to my head. While it's plugged in and charging, the backlight is so bright it makes my room too light to get comfortable, and I end up having to unplug it and pray the battery doesn't die before my alarm goes off in the morning. Is there any way to turn the backlight off COMPLETELY while it charges?
 
I'm pretty sure if you lock the key guard it'll go black after a few minutes.

Also, make sure it's turned on when charging (not off) because then it'll stay bright.
