Apparently the recall of about 500,000 Avalon sedans and Land Cruiser SUVs for a potentially serious steering defect has been extended to some Lexus models up to 2007. The defective steering lock bar could loosen or break and result in complete loss of steering while the vehicle is moving.
This latest recall affecting the Lexus is in addition to recent Lexus recalls involving defective engines (stalling) and gas tanks ( which could leak and explode).
All of these recalls, which obviously involve safety issues, are mandatory, but Toyota likes to refer to them with a straight face as part of its "voluntary safety campaign".
