Drivers beware! A new initiative by the Lexington Police Department has them looking for people using cell phones behind the wheel.
The number of distracted driving accidents just continues to rise, especially in Lexington. But thanks to a $20,000 grant, starting Tuesday, Lexington Police will try and lower those numbers and alarming statistics.
Officers will be out working in pairs - one driving and the other spotting, looking for just 2 things:
"One will be the actual act of texting, and the other will be operating a motor vehicle by an individual who is less than 18 years of age, which is prohibited," said Lt. JJ Lombardi.
If caught, drivers will be hit with a $25 fine for breaking the law, plus another $146 in court cost.
Police say this initiative will end at the end of the year or when the grant money runs out.
