lexar 4gb flash drive unable to be read?

I have a 4gb chip that I use for my cell phone pictures. I recently got a flash drive for it so I can place pictures from my computer onto it. when I place the flash drive into the computer, a screen pops up saying that the disk I inserted is not readable by this computer

1. My computer is a mac OS X
2. The flash drive is by gear head
3. When I insert the flash drive I get a message saying that the disk I inserted is not readable by this computer.
4. The flash driver/chip is not damage.

Any suggestions?
