My son (21) takes the 5 mg. dose. He started on the 10 but could not take the side effect of feeling tired and yawning all the time. He's doing well on the lower dose, but still complains of being a bit tired. But his anxiety is better.

I think it's different for many people, you just have to go with your gut and take the dose that feels right. I've been too over medicated in the past and I'm trying to prevent it this time. My Dr told me to start at 5mg and see what happens. Thanks for all the replies. It's very helpfull when we can compare notes and help eachother out.

Hi everyone. Im new here, I was on lexapro before and at first they had put me on 10mg but i got horrible side effects from it so they put me on 5mg , which didnt help with the 5mg i looked horrible with severe nasty bruises all over my body kinda made it look like i was getting beat. So i just wanted to let everyone know that is taken Lexapro if you are noticing bruising its most likely a side effect to the med. Hope it all works for you guys.

I take 5 mg. I started at 5 for 4 days and then moved up to 10 and couldn't take the side effects (heart racing, skin crawling) and was moved back to 5. My doctor says it will work at that dose, but might take a little longer for the full effect (it's actually the "elderly" dose).

I might try to move back up to 10 again at some point, but 5 works for me now!

Thank you for letting me know. I took Lexapro a while back and didn't get any bruises that I can remeraber but I did get other side effects when I started and when I stopped taking it. But I will keep that in mind, thanks for sharing

I'm very sensitive to SSRI's and have always had a problem taking them. I've been off Lexapro for over a year now and even though it worked for me in the past and I know I got up to 10mgs I didn't want to get those side effects again. I am feeling a little anxiety with the 5mgs and its only been 3 days but I'm also taking Lorazepam with it to help. Thanks for your reply, I appreciate it. How long did it take to get some effects for you on 5mgs?

Hmmm...let me think. I was on 5 mg for 4 days and then 10 for 2 weeks maybe? My anxiety was getting better at that point, but the 10 mg. was awful. When I went down to 5 mg. I had an initial increase in my anxiety, but felt ok again in 2-3 days. So, it's hard to tell how long the 5 mg. took to work because I had been on 10 mg. However, on the 10 mg. I felt better within 7 days!

I'm thinking of giving the 5 mgs a chance to see if that would work for me. If I dont see improvment in 2 weeks I'll go up to 10mgs. Have you experienced any weigh gain? I always gain weight on SSRI's but I'm not not sure if it's because you get I become comfortable and eat more. I'm watching what I eat now and excercising.

I was so wrong in starting out on 5mg Lexapro. Did nada for me (or at least not enough). Went up to 10mg which was the right dose, but had to go through all the side effects all over again. And yes, you have to go through about 4 weeks of brutal side effects for it to work. It's worth it though. It's like feeling a curtain lifting.
