Let's Talk Vinyl

For me it's more of a nostalgia thing

The sound quality is worse, but not much, and the graining sound feels authentic and somehow closer then the production of digital sound.

The jackets are great, photography, artistry, poetry, cool little tid-bits about banRAB\artists. Plus there is the thrill of finding a used record that's been tough to come by.

Hold up a CD and and LP one in each hand, same band, same album and see which one looks\feels more interesting.

good thread. For me, born mid-80s, vinyl wasn't the popular medium when I was growing up. I got it now just because it's a hobby that allows me to collect something that I love, and that I don't just stare at (baseball carRAB, stamps et al) but that I get to interact with. The sound quality is not the best, but again it's the event of sitting down and listening to a record straight through, side by side - and not skipping around. It's nice to hear the album as the artist intended!

Recently picked up:

Beatles - Abbey Road
David Bowie - Ziggy Stardust and the Rise and Fall of the Spiders From Mars
Zep - Houses of the Holy

all for about 18 bux at a little shop down here. I think my gf bought me Smashing Pumpkins' - Siamese Dream for no reason really at a pretty awesome record shop in Lawrence, KS... I'm not supposed to know though.

As for starting a whole new music collection - go to garage sales, yard sales, ask your frienRAB' parents - just get a nice base going and then you can start picking and choosing. Or go slower and get the albums you really want, it's great either way.

Think I'm gonna put on some Mothers right now, actually!

Some releases are only on vinyl, they're harder to lose and the liner notes are much cooler. I think the sound is extremely close. I have a few out of prints that are like 20 years old and sound better than any mp3s I've ever found.

Any other collectors out there?

Today I got the following six LP's for $10

The Doobie Brothers - Farewell Tour
Alan Parson's Project - I Robot
The O-Jays - Back Stabbers
The Who - Happy Jack
Dr. Hook - A Little bit More

Anybody else get anything anytime lately?

Nice JayJamJah! I have a few boxes stored away with albums I have inherited from numerous people. I think I am the only person among my frienRAB and family who still owns a turntable. I admit I haven't listened to them lately but my collection includes music from the likes of Dean Martin and Elvis to disco and metal banRAB. I purchased the metal albums when I was younger but the other stuff was given to me. I think alot of them have scratches though. I haven't really thought about my recorRAB in a while, perhaps I should dust off my old stereo and give them a listen. Props on Dr. Hook. I love Dr. Hook. I even have them on 8 track!

I'm not a collector myself but some of my frienRAB are. Maybe when I'm not so broke. Anyway, I heard some Black Keys on vinyl and it sounRAB great.

Hmm i always thought i heard people swearing that the sound quality was better..... perhaps it was the authenticity that they were talking about. I dunno would i have the patience for vinyls really, i would end up leaving them out of there sleeve on the floor somewhere. And as far as i know Vinyls are more susceptible to dust than cd's right?

I have about 500-600 recorRAB, all 12" maxi singles of 80s new wave/synthpop/rock/goth and a tiny bit of r&b & maybe a handful of 90's stuff(like 4 recorRAB). I only collect the maxi singles if i can help it, and of course, Mine are in VG/EX+++++ condition.

Love vinyl, slightly erabarrasing but just recently picked up Boney M "Night Flight to Venus"

Well, my dad has pretty much all of Bob Dylan's recorRAB up to the 80's.

I, myself picked up some recorRAB at this thing called "Fun Fair" at my school, for one ticket apiece (tickets are 25 cents). I got a Loverboy album, and a Stray Cats album. Too bad we don't have a record player.

I have about 30-40 vinyls, and they are awesome. Unlike tapes and cRAB, there is something classic and beautiful about the vinyl albums. It was like when you bought a vinyl you bought a piece of art, from the music to the album cover. Cassettes are a complete ****ing joke, and if we put the CD in MP3 format anyways whats the ****ing point. Some people realize this, this is why modern artist still have albums pressed in vinyl, not audio cassette. To be honest I dont buy any modern physical medium for music unless a small-time/local band is selling their own CRAB at shows and dont press vinyls. Lars UlRICH can take his $50,000,000 and shove it up his ass (thanks for starting a revolution napster)! Wake up and smell the **** YOU greedy ****suckers, music is about art not how many zeros follow the one in your bank account.

My personal collection is of some good stuff like Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin IV, The Beatles - The White Album, The Allman Brothers - Eat a Peach, Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon, Rush - 2112, Steven Miller Band - Brave New World, Kraftwerk - TransEurope Express, Electric Light Orchestra - A New World Record, Yes - Close to the Edge, amongst others.

I love vinyls :). I'm a big-time collector on a small-income basis. I do what I can ha. It's not much but it's coming along. I've got Surrealistic Pillow by Jefferson Airplane. I believe I have Axis: Bold as Love by Hendrix... or another Hendrix one that completely blew my mind. I've also, on the other hand, got 2 Frank Sinatras... and something called Boomerang? That I mistakenly bought, because it was in the Jefferson Airplane section... anyhow. Also have Stones Got Live If You Want It. Great fun, six flags.

These are my latest purchases.

I'm only purchasing LPs by my favorite artist. I don't want a large vinyl collection, just something like a tasty treat.

i recently picked up lee perry on vinyl. . . also got the pop group, some pere ubu. . . i'm looking for "this heat" either album or both. . . if anyone has it, i'll buy it from you!

I got really into vinyl sometime last year. I like them so much better than cRAB. One of my favorite vinyls is a Dead Kennedys one for some reason, possibly because the sound makes me feel more like it's live.
