Lenses and flashes best for shows?

I've just been asked to start taking pictures at shows. I have a Canon Rebel xs with the standard lens, macro lenses, and a wide angle lens. If I don't use flash, it's blurry and when I use flash, they look washed out. What are the best lenses and/or flashes to use in lighting at shows? and what settings are best?
