lego indiana jones nintendo ds lite game- wont save?

I finished the first game and finished level one, at the end of the level when it went to save i go a msg on the screen saying
The data could not be written. Turn off power and reinsert.

Failed to save. Turn off game and reinsert card.

I also am not sure how to save during the game.
didnt mean to say 'finished first game' meant that i just finished first level
