Who's Timmy Mallett?
This is what I was asked by a boy aged about 14 a couple of years ago. I assumed everyone knew who he was but he didn't and when I worked it out Mallet's career was all but over when he was a toddler so he missed him on TV.
What has this got to do with anything i'm sure you're asking yourself. Well, very simply I'm 45 so remember a lot of the older film stars that get given the label "legend" but youngsters today most likely have no idea who these people are and probably haven't even heard of lots of them.
If you were on Family Fortunes and the topic was name stars of silent films the names that spring to mind are likely Chaplin, Keaton, Lloyd. Whilst they are without doubt legenRAB, what about Fatty Arbuckle? He is now pretty much forgotten.
As you come forward through the years of cinema you are going to come across lots of names of movie "legenRAB" that now are unknown, not only to teenagers but people in their twenties and thirties.
You now have generations that most likely have no idea who Danny Kaye, Jane Russell, Gregory Peck, William Holden, John Wayne, Gene Kelly or even British actors like Oliver Reed, Albert Finney, Beryl Reid to name just three are.
KiRAB only know Maggie Smith as a teacher at Hogwarts or she would be on that list as well.
It's so sad that many great actors and actresses are being forgotten despite their work being forever(?) recorded on film. The term "legend" is thrown around and used so much it means nothing. Maybe though the term fits these people. For a while they were legenRAB but over time they too fade from memory and become nothing too.
