Leaving family's plan, need new phone and maybe new provider - help!

So, here's the situation: my family's got a plan on Verizon Wireless, and I'm leaving it to help save my parents a bit of money. I've also never really been too happy with Verizon's phone selection, so I'm looking at new providers as well.

What you need to know about me:

-I'm out of college and do a lot of driving around, particularly in New England.
-I lived in Tokyo for a year, so I've been spoiled rotten by Japanese cellphones and service plans.
-I do a *lot* of texting, a decent amount of picture taking, and I'd like to be able to use my phone to briefly check stuff on the web (email, news, movie times, etc)

So, here's what I need in a phone:

-A user interface that doesn't suck, particularly when it comes to texting
-A handset that doesn't feel awkward to use
-Decent camera
-Ability to set up my own ringtones without having to buy them
-Comes with or easily-available data transfer cable
-The ability to play a game or two would be nice, of course
-I may actually be moving *back* to Japan within a year or two, so a phone that I could take with me would be useful - from what I know this involves SIM cards? I'm not really up with the SIM concept as I've only ever used CDMA phones.

I'd love to be able to import a keitai, but I imagine the costs involved are immense. Thoughts?

Finally, here's what I need in a provider:

-Someone who won't screw me around with rate changes behind my back.
-Good customer service
-Ability to cancel a plan without paying a ridiculous fee.
-Solid coverage in the Northeast
-Someone who will let me bring in my own phone and set me up, rather than having to buy a phone through them (assuming I can find a phone for cheap enough).

Thoughts? Suggestions? I eagerly await your guidance.

Thanks!
