Le Petit Prince

I have been trying to pay more attention to international animation, despite the fact that I may very well never be able to watch many of the animated programs that I follow. I recently watched a trailer of “Le Petit Prince”, which is apparently based on a book by the same name, and I liked the look of it. I must confess that the opening lost me – a rose with a face receiving a letter isn’t exactly the best way to introduce a series – but it picked up when it got to the planet of time. It seems more artsy than most other animated programs, which I happen to like, and that little fox is downright adorable.

It’s unfortunate that so many of these foreign animated programs get dubbed in English but never make it to the United States. There is a market for animated content, and the recent string of successful Canadian acquisitions has proven that looking elsewhere for content can work out, but I doubt we’ll be seeing this one anytime soon. It should premiere elsewhere before much longer.

There is a lot more information about the series on its website. It does mention something that has me slightly confused, however.

That's a lot of content. I'm inclined to believe it has to be a mistake of some sort, but if it isn't, then damn... I guess France really loves that book. Some of the other websites list it as 52x26, so perhaps it's actually 52 episodes each lasting 26 minutes. The math is still the same.

This isn't the first time The Little Prince was adapted into an animated series. There was a Japanese anime adaptation made in 1978 by a company called Knack. This version was seen in the U.S. on Nickelodeon as "The Adventures of the Little Prince" in the early 1980s. OTOH, that series wasn't based directly on the book itself. That said, I suspect that this show will probably be more faithful to the book (although, I don't recall ever hearing about a fox character from the book). When/if this show airs in the U.S., I might check it out.
