Lawyer vs. Court Appointed Attorney for an Embezzlement charge?

Family member is in jail on embezzlement charge (little over 100K). First offender. Old and in poor health. Should we get a lawyer or use a court appointed attorney?
SHOULD'VE SAID HIRED ATTORNEY VS. COURT APPOINTED ATTORNEY. SORRY!
