as ____ is to ____ :
A. perforated : punctured
B. perfidious : artless
C. decorous : tinted
D. unadorned : bare
E. extravagant : lively
this is a sample analogy for the GRE. I looked up each of the terms and know that lavish and spartan are antonyms, but I don't think any of the other pairs are exact opposites. What kind of reasoning should be used when it's unclear whether two words are antonyms - if they have any kind of relation, should they be picked? Like options A and D, both contain synonyms so at least the words are related. I don't see any good relation at all for B.
I don't think I have a terrible vocabulary, but even when I can look up these words in a dictionary I don't know how to choose which fits the best.
