I bought this box set of dvd's from zavvi just after christmas. On playing them in my dvd player there is a lot of noise. At first I thought it must my player, but they make the same noise on another dvd player I have. Has anyone elase had this problem.
thankyou for any comments

they are not copies and the discs look clean. There were noisy even on first use. I've never had a problem with any discs like this before

DepenRAB what sort of sound your talking about.

I have had dvRAB and cRAB that are slightly unballanced so when they spin up it sounRAB like a jet engine.

Others have had the sound recorded at a very low level so I have to turn the sound way up, in that case I get noise.

Whats the image quality like ? if its excellent they were probably remastered and sound should be fine, I would take them back.

If its average quality they might be the sort you get on public domain sites and sound on those is pretty poor.

update to my previous post

I checked online for this set and there were a lot of comments on amazon about it.

The positive ones seemed to comment on how beautiful the packaging is.

One however did comment on the quality.

Despite the hype, the picture quality on these DVRAB is in no way special, in fact if you are lucky enough to have off air video recordings from the BBC or some of the Commercial UK stations in the 1980's keep hold of them, they will probably be better.

Dirt and grain are apparent on many of the prints, as well as splices, breaks and other damage. This is not because of the age of these films, but because these versions are taken from inferior, worn out prints. Soundtracks likewise vary a lot...

The 'Colorised' films are terrible, with many edits and cut scenes for American TV release. (For commercials). The process itself is dire, and these versions were done in the mid 80's, when this questionable technology was still young. Ironically, most of these films do seem to have been taken from better prints, and had some genuine clean-up work performed on them. Just a shame it's ruined by the 'Colorisation' result!

Technical quibbles aside, this is maybe the best we can expect until Hal Roach Studios gets their comedy act together and puts out a set of Laurel and Hardy films copied from the original studio negatives, properly re-mastered to today's standarRAB. See the BBC range of early Doctor Who on DVD to see how well this can be done...

I've got some I bought on VHS in the Nineties and they're quite good. They came with some free postcarRAB IIRC - the VHS equivalent of DVD extras!

The colorised versions are the old-tech versions and contain cuts here and there as they were created from cut prints. The B&W versions usually have all cuts restored and cleaned up, and better than any TV print and a darned sight better than the lower-res colorised prints. The only noise I've noticed on the set is noise I'd expect from stuff filmed in the 1920's and old-style colorisation, and certainly nothing that should spoil your enjoyment of the set.
