I went to a dermatologist today and he recommended me laser surgery for my scars (most of them were recent). It's going to cost me $400 each time and he said he's going to do it 6 times. Should I do it?
it really depenRAB on how deep the scars are; if they are really deep, than most lasers (non-ablative) will only help a little, from what i have heard, the most effective, but also the most painful, procedure is done with ablative lasers. with this kind, you would need a while to recover
if you can ask what kind of laser he would be using, that would be helpful
I think you should ask your doctor if he has any success stories using laser on his patients. Ask if he has any before and after photos. Ask what kind of results you could expect after 6 treatments, be specific, like is it going to be 30%, 50%, 60% and so on. $2400 for 6 treatments is not cheap. If he can't give you a confident answer as to how much improvement you can expect, then go elsewhere. I really think it would be money down the drain. I've heard lots of people going for laser but the results were minimal compared to the costs.
I myself had acne scars - the pitted kind and about 2mm deep. I didn't do any laser surgery or other invasive procedures. I just used 2 topicals - Silkia camellia oil and Epidermx which is a home microdermabrasion cream. Results didn't show until about 6 months and after a year the results were significant. Nowadays I could barely see the scars, except the more stubborn ones on my upper lip which I use a little concealer to cover up.
A couple of other merabers also posted results using these topicals in the past though they don't seem to frequent this board any more. My experience tells me that there are options to surgery (which doesn't guarantee results anyway) and at least they won't cost you an arm and a leg.
