Deadline coming up!!!? OK... My Background Investigator saw that my credit history was not Horrible but it wasn't good. (I went through a bad divorce.) I've passed everything else including my agility test. However, they told me to fix my credit or they would have to disqualify my application due to my credit. NOW... during these tough times plus divorce being a factor what is the possibility that they would over see my credit (cause they can see that I'm working on it too and all my current accounts are in good standing) and allowing me to continue with my process.
BTW- I'm a single Mom of 2 and I am VERY determined to be a Law Enforcement Officer. It's what I've always wanted. It's in my blood.

Also...
I can't get a loan to pay it off cause I have poor credit.
I can't borrow it.
I only owe $10,000, but I just can't afford to pay in by the deadline.

(My ex husband max our cards on the lady he was cheating with, he filed bankruptcy and I didn't)

By fixing your credit I assume that they mean paying back any and all outstanding defaults...is this correct? You can negotiate significant settlements on defaulted debt...like 25%...so you may be able to settle this debt for as little as $2,500. Be advised that this process of renewing contact with debt collectors out of the blue can be risky and it may stir up more trouble than it's worth...Your effort could be met with threatening, abusive collection calls...threats of lawsuits...and once they find out that you are willing to pay they will probably add on all sorts of fees and they’ll come after you for two or even three times the original amount of debt...so be forewarned. If you want to proceed:

Pull your credit report at annualcreditreport.com and contact all the collection agencies that you owe debt to...make settlement offers starting at 20%. Get all terms IN WRITING. DO NOT admit in writing to owing the debt...if you do you might trigger a lawsuit against yourself. Mail them a vaguely worded statement like:

I am willing to settle this matter for 20% of the original amount. This is in no way an admission of this debt, but rather an attempt to settle this matter. Your firm must send me a written agreement on your company's letterhead that you will accept this amount as "payment in full" and that this issue will be settled. Upon receipt of this agreement, I will mail you a money order for this amount.

You need to be aware that this process to negotiate and pay...then the eventual update to your credit report will be 2 months at a minimum...more like 3 or 4 months...
