Larry David / Woody Allen Whatever works

It was bad... so bad.

The back story is that it was an old rejected screen play by woody allen. It should have stayed rejected, its dated, unoriginal for woody, and painful to watch. Its clearly not been updated at all, its like watching woody allens first draft of something back when he was young.

It's had some very harsh reviews, including no stars from the Daily Telegraph. I watched a long clip someone had posted on YouTube and to be honest it put me off seeing the film.

More than that, I'd now like to see a comedy in which a cynical, world-weary old man isn't interested in a pretty younger woman who mysteriously finRAB him attractive. Or is that too implausible?

I didn't take issue with the may december relationship. Thats the least of the problems, The dated script couldn't sell it. The characters were like half formed early brainstorms of woody, not enough for a film. They obviously exist in reality, woody allen being prime example himself. As for an older man fighting off evan rachel wood? lol yes that is a bit too hard to believe.

The thing with Woody Allen is that he's the last of the genuine film-makers, i.e. people who just love making films. He writes & directs a film every single year without fail, so even if you don't like this one, at least you know there will be another one along soon, unlike most directors these days, taking 3 or 4 years between movies... his next movie, the London-set "You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger" (with Anthony Hopkins, Antonio Banderas, Josh Brolin & Naomi Watts) has already premiered in Cannes (to "muted" reception), and the one after that, "Midnight In Paris" (with Adrien Brody, Owen Wilson, Michael Sheen & Kathy Bates) is about to start shooting.

Woody apparently always has 5 or 6 scripts in varying states of completion, and when it's time to make a new one he picks the one that's either most finished, or best for the availability of certain cast members, or simply the one he fancies most at the time. WW was a 70's script he wrote for Zero Mostel that he brought out of mothballs when Larry David expressed interest in working with him. I was disappointed in it myself, but to read some of the reviews you'd think Woody had personally insulted the critics in question...

As a fan of Woody Allen and Larry David, what can I say it's not great!
Dated, unfinished, a bit throw together and feels very cheap.............BUT I would still rather watch it than 90% of the other rubbish that is churned out.
It's not up to his even mediocre stuff but I still enjoyed it.

A match made in comedy shamayim, or so we'd have thought. I'm going to trust the torrent of withering putdowns levelled at this movie and avoid it like it's Match Point.
