larger than quarter sized bump on head no injury / not acne

My 15 year old son started to get a bump on his head above his left eyebrow. Around 6pm it had grown to about the size of a quarter and stuck out about 1/8th of an inch only the center was hard the outside was soft. Now it is 1am and it has grown bigger than a quarter and is sticking out twice as far, the center plus one side is now hard as well. He does have teenage acne but there doesn't seem to be any type of center point or like it is coming to a head. I had him try an ice pack to just see if it would reduce/stop the swelling. He said it hurt putting ice on it. Any ideas what it may be? and no he hasn't bumped his head recently.
Color change: only the center has turned red
Temperature: he says it feels hotter
 
maybe a bug/spider bite of some kind that he is having a bad reaction to? I was bit by a spider once right above my eyebrow and not only was there a big bump but my entire eye swelled almost shut.
