large hard lump on chest (male)

For months I have had sharp needle like pain around my left chest area. It usually is only for a few seconds but is very intense. Today I felt where the pain was and discovered a large hard lump over a rib right under my left nipple. It is about 2-3 inches long and a inch wide. It is not on the other side of my chest and is not part of the skin but seems to be under it. It does not move when pushed and doesn't hurt when touched, but when I experience the pain it seems to come directly from that area. I have no idea what it is, but am worried about it being cancerous.
 
Yes, men can get breast cancer, although at 1/100 the rate that women do. However, it can be deadlier in men because men often do not realize that they can get breast cancer and often tell their doctors about it at a later stage than women do.

If you are concerned that you may have breast cancer (and a lump in one's breast is a well known symptom), ask your doctor about it.
