laptop or upgrade desktop for games?

Now, it might seem likes an easy answer: upgrade desktop, but its a bit more complex :P

See, I've wanted a laptop for quite a while. I'm not a HUGE PC gamer, but i'll probably play a game every day. I want to get Empire: Total war (as i like the prequels) but the demo owned my computer.

I could simply upgrade my video card, but my birthday is coming up in early october and if I get straight A's until then, I miiiiiiight get a laptop. Hopefully it will be good enough to play empire :\

So should I try hard in school (all highest level classes and first year in highschool) and get straight A's or just simply spend my allowance and get a new video card. Personally, I have a lot more reasons to get a laptop then JUST play this game, like doing school work on my bed :P . Money isn't a huuuuuge issue but I'll put all my cash forward and maybe some birthday money I receive. Thoughts on what to do, and what's a good laptop for the price? I won't be playing games any more detailed or whatever than this

Minimum specs (i want it to run smoothly)

2.4Ghz single core processor
256MB Gfx card (DX9 compaitble)
1GB RAM (For XP, 2GB if using Vista

I'm prettty sure my computer could run it with a graphics card update. It can run Medieval II: Total war smoothly.

Thanks!
