Laptop monitor flashes when i plug in HDMI?

I have a Gateway 6860-FX and I have an HDMI port. I plugged it into my T.V. No problem, but when I try plugging the HDMI cable into my laptop, my screen flashes and it turns black. When it doesn't flash, it doesn't show up on the T.V. Just " No Signal" bouncing around everywhere. When i got to NVIDIA control panel and click clone screen ( computer same on both screens ) then apply, the screen flashes. Help.
