WASHINGTON—The chair of the Senate Homeland Security Appropriations Subcommittee, U.S. Senator Mary L. Landrieu, D-La., released the following statement this evening following the deadly explosions in Boston.
Sen. Landrieu said:
“Today’s deadly explosions in Boston are a stark reminder that we must remain vigilant at all times. This means making sure that local law enforcement and first responders, such as fire fighters and paramedics who were quick to the scene today, continue to have the proper training and equipment to respond to these types of events. That’s why I continue to highlight the importance of federal grants for state and local governments. Securing our homeland is a partnership between the federal government and local entities—one that we must continue to support and strengthen.
“Just as the runners set out this morning from Hopkinton to run the historic course over a long distance, our country must also approach combating such attacks by taking a long view with regular and routine investment in local, state and federal homeland security assets.
“Tonight, we pray for those injured and the love ones of those killed by the explosions, the city of Boston and all the local officials and first responders in charge. My office will continue to monitor the situation and is ready to assist in any way possible.”
