Landline phones suck

uh, yeah, i read his reply. he should start his own rant thread about that. my point was that so many people now have cell phones w/ all these features that they become used to them. WHY can't they get similar features on their landlines? Some people on this thread seem like they'd like to pass a law to prevent the telcos from adding features. ("I'm just happy to ask Darlene at the switchboard to connect me through to Mt. Pilate.")

there are times when i don't really want or need to talk to someone, but i'd like to send 'em a text message. I can do it if we're both on cells, but I can't do it if one of us isn't. that's what prompted me to start the thread.

what prompts others to be aplogists for poorly performing telcos?

My point being, your reply had nothing to do with what you quoted...
I think most people just don't care. Cell phones are an entirely different market, and as such are generally geared towards the younger crowd. Teens feel they need the OMG cool ringers and flashy lights to be cool. Most people don't care what their home phone does so long as it sends and receives calls.

The market for what you're talking about is very niche, and you've let to list any useful features in any of your arguments.
You obviously own a computer, I've never seen a cell company that didn't have a web interface to send text messages. With voice mail and answering machines, text messaging on land lines is an asinine idea. You've yet to make a point showcasing a 'poorly performing telco;' they do their jobs, and POTs service is VERY stable these days. It's ridiculous to call the telcos poor just because they don't offer the niche features you're looking for.

Furthermore, if, and when, the telcos upgrade, there might be a market for your features. Personally, I find those features pointless, not to mention that the technology isn't there in the infrastructure yet. I'd much rather see these companies lay fiber, finally get trunking and multiplexing right and start offering video services. That's actually useful!

All phones suck. I hate phones.

If I wanted to listen to some chirpy little melody, I'd buy a keyboard. And if I wanted to play video games, I'd, well........I don't play video games so it doesn't matter.

Phones are for talking. Who cares about that other shit? (JMO)

I hate those fucking things. Jamster takes it up the ass.

A keyboard for chirpies? What the fuck?

And cell phones games suck, too. Snake 2? Gimme Quake II. That's better.

It would be nice to see a 3D accelerated PDA as opposed to a phone. ATi, nVidia, Intel, Neomagic, you hearing me? We want a 3D accelerated PDA! You're the only four who do that shit, pressue Casio or Sharp or HP into making one!

I don't like phones.

Phones are for talking and it is a waste of money for the other shit. They get in the way and who gives a fuck about the ringtones or what game is on the. I only use my cellphone for emergancys. (sp) 20 fuckin cents for one minute come one what a fuckin rip off. Thats my opinion.

I agree with you on the ringers and games. What the hell kind of service do you have that costs 20 cents a minute though? My overage minutes are only that much...

Having a cordless phone that provides crappy feature is not a Telco issue. It is more of a telephone manufacture fault.

I do believe that the Telco

Like i said the phone is just for a emergency only. To tell you the true i really don't remember what service it was because i cancled it like a month ago.

Well..

Why does a landline telephone have a high reliability 1) and is there little chance you can play games with it 2)?

1) See the drawing.

The telephone company only adds some switching technology, but the basic idea is just as simple as in this circuit drawing.

2) The bandwith of a traditional phone was 4000 Hz. (4 kHz)
Enough to understand a human voice.
This low bandwith is very cheap, if you consider the bandwith of internet is a multitude of that. My cable is 100 Mbps.

In fact telephone via internet is a waste of bandwith.. :thumbsdn:
