Landline phones suck

WTF is it w/ landline phones? even the cheapest POS giveaway cell phone does all kinds of cool shit that most landline phones don't. why can't i send a text msg to a landline phone? how about a picture? ringtones anyone? different ring based on my caller id info? izzat so frickin' hard to achieve? You'd think that having that wire jacked into it would make it possible to do MORE stuff than you can wirelessly.

I can snap a quick picture w/ my camera phone and send it w/ a text msg to another phone. You should be able to do it at the same time w/ a landline.

i want a $20 landline phne that does the same shit my cell phone does. Considering the existing cell tech and the no. of existing landlines, that should be completely doable.

Do you think some dumbass telco exec will figure that out?
 
A landline telephone doesn't suck.

You better get an old one.
Not that "through air" stuff.

If electricity breaks down, cell phones will likely drop dead also.
And also those modern phones also, because they need the feed from elektricity.

Telephone over landline is a rather simple system, that has it's own power.
That makes it very reliable.
Except earthquakes perhaps.

Yeah that happened here during 9/11 and during the blackout. Everyone was using cellphones and nobody could get through. Landlines were the only way.

Cossak's just saying he wants more features on his landline. Like games and texting options and internet access. hmmm...eh, whatev.
 
I know a lot of phones that do some of those things. Mine has several different ring tones that you can choose from. A patriotic one, one for christmas, and songs. It's really cool. It didnt cost 20 bucks tho, more like 50 but it's awesome. AND it even talks when it rings. It goes... "call from, Macon, GA" or "call from...Parrish, Richard". They make video phones and what-not nowadays too. Check em out :thumbsup:
 
i know the advantages of POTS (plain ol' telephone system). what i'm railing about is the "well that's how we've always done it" attitude. things improve and change. i'm not saying that i need to play a fucking video game on my landline during an earthquake, but it should have more features than it typically does now.

Actually, i don't even have a traditional landline anymore. i dumped mine for vonage VOIP about 2 or 3 years ago. couldn't be happier. the few occasions that it was down i still had cell phone service. Actually, i could be happier, but that's another post. LOL.
 
yeah i just bought a cordless phone this weekend that has changeable ringtones: 4 different pitches of the same electronic warble. phone was $15. that's not what i'm talking about. i want a way to install the ringtones I WANT on my phone. and i'm not talking about some rip-off service offered by my phone provider. $50 is too much. man, you people seem like you're happy w/ any old shit the phone co. wants to toss your way.

i bought my first pentium computer back around 1990 or 91. it cost me $3500 and it was not exactly top of the line. today i can have a machine that's 10 times better for 10% of the cost. the same economics SHOULD apply to your phone, but for some reason they don't. i think that reason is lack of imagination and innovation at the telcos.
 
well, i thought i did: text messaging, ring tones, image sending/receiving, callerID-based call handling (if a call comes in from this no. send it right to voice mail or ring w/ a special ringtone)

that's just for starters. nothing technologically "out there" for any of those.
 
If you're at home you have a computer, a television, a radio and whatever else. Why would you need that stuff added to your phone? Check your email on your computer, text messaging on your cellphone.

It just doesn't seem like it would sell.

I mean now they even have capabilities to go on the internet through your television so you don't even have to get your ass off of the couch.

But then again it's thinking like mine that slows down progress right? Damn me!

i just did invent something: a landline phone w/ cell phone features. If bill gates can get a patent for "inventing" a phone call memo
then my idea should qualify too. i guess in your mind if somehting is easier to do or use it must be a bad idea. i should have to get off my couch and perform some kind of wiring puzzle before i can access the internet on my tv, huh? you'd probably be satisfied to have a phone that was a wooden box w/ a crank handle on it hanging 20 feet up the telephone pole nearest to your house i suppose. :confused:

you don't know if something would sell until it's there for people to buy. the president of IBM once said that he saw a market for 4, maybe 5 computers IN THE WHOLE FUCKING WORLD! good thing he had another job beside fortune teller.

Look man, i'm just saying that they could easily add some of this stuff to POTS. they're just too fucking lazy to do so.
 
No, not really. Cell phones typically do a shitty job with everything besides phone calls.

I have three computers, a new desktop, an older laptop from 1998, and a DOS machine from 1994, a 486.

They each have their own purpose, and they do things the other machines cannot. The new desktop I built myself runs all the cutting edge stuff and is my mainstay, the laptop can be carried wherever I want, and the DOS machine runs older software and games that the other two cannot.

I also have a Radio Shack wireless phone - it's the best one I've used to date.

My cell phone? An entry-level Nokia with a black and white screen, and no features at all, because I only need it to make calls, and I share it with my brother. I rarely use it.

I think people have to stop getting all-in-one devices that do a poor job at everything and get devices that do what they advertise fully.
 
with that kind of attitude we'd all be banging out these messages on Underwoods (that's an old timey typwriter kiddies) and sticking 'em in envelopes to send to the forum. Wait... this forum wouldn't even exist if we did that. :rolleyes:
 
I have Vonage as well, but it sucks when the cable goes out. My phone NEVER went out, but cable or internet goes out at least once a month. New technologies are just dependent on more new technologies. It's a quagmire and always will be one; VOIP doesn't help me one bit when the cable is out and I need to call 911. :rolleyes:
Wow. Did you actually READ his reply? He's not saying the technology is bad, just that too many companies are making shitty multi-function devices. For example, mp3 players with cameras and such. It's asinine because clueless consumer will pay more for crap they don't need, as well as it detracting from quality. It has nothing to do with "banging out messages on underwood" or whatever ridiculous response you had.
