Lag time on TV for gaming?

Ive been reading about the best TVs for gaming and some people say that each TV has a different response time. Im not a uber legit hardcore nerd gamer but i would still want something that is good to play FPS games on daily. Does this response time really make a difference unless you compare 2 TVs right next to eachother? I have a 32in Vizio LCD in my room and that works great.
