lack of power with my bike..?

i have a 1984 honda mtx 125 with lack of power and very smokey on start up.. but smoke does clear after a minet or 2..what could be causing this.. i think it could either be the head gasket or the piston and rings.. and the gearbox splits verticly if the gasket was gone could this also be causing my problem.. thanks. any help appreciated
but if it was the rings.. wouldn't it stay smokey ????
