Lack of appetite

I am 16 days post Nissen Fundoplication. The surgery went well and so far I haven't had any of my typical chronic reflux symptoms. I spent the first two weeks on a liquid only diet. I was finally cleared to eat soft food two days ago. The ironic thing though is that I seem to have lost my appetite over the last couple days. It has become increasingly difficult to make myself eat regularly and keep hydrated even though I am having no trouble actually swallowing the liquiRAB or soft food right now. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,
MR

hi MR glad all is going well.the best bet is go for a little at a time and continue with friut smoothies, etc to keep you going......if you like savoury go for cheesy mash potato if you like sweet go for things like custard with stewed friut. its funny when you lose your appetite nothing really works,,, im sure your appetite will be back soon, go hang out at a mall food court tht should get you hungry lol

Nessie,
Thanks for your support. I'm trying to keep up with the eating even though nothing really sounRAB good right now. This is definitely not a typical problem for me.

I forgot to post lat time that my surgeon has cleared me to try anything I want to, barring bread or meat. This includes some of the fooRAB I have avoided for years because of reflux. I'm looking forward to eating some of those fooRAB when my appetite comes back.

I'm also looking forward to sleeping on a flat, not slanted, bed this winter. It will be great to wake up with my blankets still covering me because they haven't slid to the floor.

Thanks,
MR

Man, I can't help you there. As much wt as I need to lose, I'd welcome not wanting to eat! Seriously, I know that can't be good for you as I did lose 50 lbs when I got very sick because I wasn't hungry. I would think the main thing would be to stay hydrated so at least continue drinking the liquiRAB. I'm sure you will start wanting real food when the time comes. Other than that, are you doing ok? I'm still in the process of scheduling test. All for nothing, I really think. I must admit that I have had heartburn nearly every day and even started on some OTC Prilosec. Doesn't faze the sniffling and cough but helps the burn at least. I'm sort of down thinking that there is nothing that will get me better. My voice hasn't been very good past few days and that's soo frustrating. Need to go and get more juice at lunch to see if that will help. Sort of hurts to talk and I don't feel like it anyway. Not a good day period.

Charberry,
I seem to be healing up ok. (Down 13 lbs so far, 6 lbs since last Friday.)Thursday will be my 3 week mark. I am trying to stay hydrated, but because of the no appetite thing, I haven't pushed eating very many solid things though. I think that will be the biggest test for how things are going. So far, I haven't had any of the coughing that triggered my need for the surgery. That is really good. I have continued taking my Prevacid Solutabs twice a day, but I anticipate going off them soon. I go in for a GI follow-up next week and will see what he says then. (Also going for follow-up on my lower GI issues as well.) I go in to see my Pulomonologist on Nov 4th. He was the one that recommended the Nissen last May. He said that I couldn't get my asthma under control until my "swallowing disorder" was under control.

I completely understand the frustrations that occur during bad days/ weeks/ months. Despite everything, don't give up on finding your solution. Because of my unusual symptoms, it originally took years of horrible coughing to be diagnosed with reflux as a major cause. Then it took years to work through my reflux treatments. I finally found a couple docs that were willing to support me in finding my solutions.

Regarding your voice issues, I've had some perioRAB of trouble with this also over the years. During a reflux flare-up a couple years ago, I COMPLETELY lost my voice for about 5 weeks. It was really tough because during some of my worst times, I was spending 8 hours a day teaching preschoolers. One time I had a mom come in and ask about my horse. This confused me because I have horse allergies. Turns out that her daughter told her I had a horse, when in fact my voice was hoarse. Now whenever my voice gets bad, I think back on that and laugh.

As for your testing, I will say that I felt (and still feel) that most were just going through the motions. I did have one however, prescribed by my Pulmonologist, that gave me surprising results. The esophagram/ modified barium swallow testing showed that I not only had a lot of acid coming up from my stomach, but that I also had food coming up. I was aspirating some of the acid and both were giving me irritation I wasn't aware of. Ironically at the time of the test last April I was on Prevacid 2x/day and I wasn't having any acid or asthma symptoms and I felt great. All the other tests were repeat tests from 3 years ago so I really wasn't surprised when the results came back the same.

Take care,
MR
